Recognising the importance of sport to an Eton education, the College is undertaking the largest-ever refurbishment and expansion of its sports facilities. Together with the recently opened aquatics facility, ‘Athens’, the Indoor Sports Complex will allow generations of Eton boys to benefit from and be inspired by a state-of-the-art teaching and training environment.

At the heart of this complex will be the ‘large hall’. This is designed to be a single open volume which can be divided and used in multiple ways. It will be critical to the development of a ‘whole school’ sports programme.
As a school with care for thirteen hundred boys our ambition is to provide every boy with sporting opportunities tailored to his needs. As a result, this hall will encompass the ambitions of our top sportsmen as well as providing a broad opportunity for many for whom sport is an enjoyable activity, underpinning mental health and physical well-being.
Underpinning any competitive sport today is the need for a participant to understand his body, to be able to strengthen it and to have access to an ideal training facility.
The Athletics Performance Centre is designed for this. It will provide a dedicated space, which is well lit and airy where boys can safely train with both resistance and free weights.
Eton has a long and distinguished history as a centre for climbing. More recently boys have been enthusiastic and successful competitors in sports climbing.
The new facility will have a competition-level climbing wall and a bouldering wall on the mezzanine – both will be flexible and new routes can be designed and created. This means that Etonians will be able to train on site and avoid the need for long commutes to external providers.
Ever since the Italian fencing master Domenic Angelo opened ‘The School of Arms’ Eton has taught fencing.
The building will provide a dedicated salle with all the necessary equipment to both train and compete at the highest level. The room will be on the second floor and will be both well lit and quiet as befits a sport requiring intense concentration. Eton will be able to build on the traditional strength of this sport and continue to compete for national honours.
Golf is a sport for life and a good grounding in the key techniques is the critical foundation for a lifetime in the sport.
Our state of the art golf simulator will transform the training we can offer boys, year-round and at all times of the day. We will be able to work on all aspects of a boys swing and be able to ‘play’ some of the great courses in the world. This, coupled with our nine-hole golf course, provides the perfect preparation for an enthusiastic golfer.
Eton has had a ‘dojo’ for many years and this will be a multi-purpose space allowing boys to learn the skills required in Judo, Capoeira, Taekwondo and other martial arts.
This well proportioned room with ample storage will be able to also offer quieter activities such as Yoga which are key to enhancing boy’s well-being and allowing for periods of relaxation and meditation in the midst of a busy school life.
Eton will provide a dedicated Squash Centre with two types of courts, one set glass backed allowing ease of coaching and as ‘show courts’ in competition. The other set, fully walled, will be ideal for beginners and those developing their confidence.
After our recent Squash tour numbers are burgeoning and the new facilities will be needed to facilitate both internal competition through the Squash ladders and also inter-school matches.
Our existing 25 metre rifle range will be restored and refurbished.
The presence of the range in the centre of the School will allow a renewed emphasis on house shooting competitions and out of that will allow us to identify talented shots to join the VIII able to train and compete at numerous external events.
With this impressive new sports complex Eton will be able to offer year round training, helping current and future generations of boys build the strength and endurance to stand them in good stead for later life.
